Greek and Cypriot commemorations of past terrorism

In July and August 2026, Greece and Cyprus held several commemorations marking anniversaries of past terrorist attacks and political killings. On 9 July, communities in Aigialía and Leonidio marked the 30th anniversary of the 1996 murders of Tasos Isaak and Solomos Solomos in Cyprus. In Aigialía, the ceremony included the victims’ family members and local officials, while in Leonidio, a group of motorcyclists and walkers held a two-day remembrance that included a friendship declaration and a wreath-laying ceremony. On 14 July, Greece marked the 34th anniversary of the 1992 rocket attack by the 17 November terrorist group that killed student Thanos Axarlian. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Defence Minister Nikos Dendias issued statements reaffirming the nation's resolve against terrorism. On 15 July, the Isak-Solomou Memory Initiative met with leaders in both countries. Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides pledged to take all necessary steps to bring those responsible for the 1996 killings to justice. In Athens, Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas reaffirmed respect for the victims and pledged to pursue pending arrest warrants. On 8 August, a major memorial service was held in Paralimni, Cyprus, attended by President Christodoulides. The event included a motorcycle procession and the unveiling of a new monument. where President Christodoulides stated that the Republic of Cyprus would intensify efforts to execute 13 national and five international arrest warrants, noting they remain unexecuted due to the refusal of Turkey and the occupying regime to cooperate. On 11 14 August, commemorations continued for the death of Tassos Isaac, an 18-year-old Cypriot soldier murdered in 1996 during an anti-occupation demonstration Solomos Solomou, who was killed in the Deryneia buffer zone. Historical accounts noted zone in 1996 while attempting to lower a Turkish flag. The incident, which occurred during a demonstration following the period highlighted Isaac’s defiant military service death of Tassos Isaac, resulted in 1990 and Solomou being shot by Turkish snipers. While the 1996 anti-occupation motorcycle rally involving riders from 12 European countries that preceded the tragic events. Court of Human Rights found Turkey responsible for both killings in 2008, perpetrators—including former official Kenan Akin—have not been apprehended.
