The 90th Thessaloniki International Fair (DETh) concluded after marking a century since its 1926 debut. The event featured Japan as the Guest of Honor, focusing on the ‘takumi’ philosophy of craftsmanship to strengthen bilateral ties. Japanese Embassy Deputy Head Takaaki Nemoto described the participation as a ‘great success’ for long-term trade and investment. As the fair progressed, it became a significant arena for Greek political activity. Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his party, ELAS, utilized the event to launch a new political phase, presenting a program aimed at engaging local communities, workers, farmers, and small business owners nationwide. Concurrently, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the New Democracy government faced scrutiny. While the administration maintains that elections are scheduled for spring 2027, the fair highlighted growing friction. Despite policy announcements intended to bolster support, the government encountered criticism and disappointment from sectors opposing privatization. Recent developments at the fair included presentations on the Just Transition Program, which outlined investment plans for energy, transport, education, and entrepreneurship to boost local employment and youth opportunities. However, a Pulse poll conducted for SKAI TV revealed deep public skepticism toward leadership. Approval ratings remained low, with Prime Minister Mitsotakis at 32%, while Nikos Androulakis and Alexis Tsipras each held 25%. Economic and diplomatic anxieties persist, as 31% of respondents believe ‘none’ of the political parties can effectively address inflation, and 54% expressed significant concern regarding the management of Greek-Turkish relations. Following the fair, political discourse has shifted toward the feasibility of competing government programs. Public concern remains high regarding stagnant wages, pensions, and inflation. Within this debate, PASOK MP Nadia Giannakopoulou has called for a ‘total restructuring’ of the education system to address staffing shortages and overcrowded classrooms.
