Greek electricity tariffs have undergone a significant shift. While fixed-price “blue” tariffs were the most economical in 2025, RAAEY monitoring for Jan–July 2026 shows variable “yellow” tariffs became the cheapest option, averaging €49.99 per month for a 300 kWh household. In contrast, blue tariffs rose to €55.86 and “green” tariffs hovered around €56.00. This shift has seen the market share of blue contracts rise from 13.27% in late 2024 to approximately 31.5% by April 2026, while green tariffs remain the most common at roughly 54%. To address rising costs, the regulator (RAEE) plans to cap monthly fixed charges on blue tariffs by the end of July, targeting fees that have reached as high as €16 per month. Market volatility remains high. By late August 2026, Greek wholesale electricity prices surged 68% in a single week, rising from €96.9/MWh to €162.7/MWh. This upward trend was driven by a shift in the energy mix where natural gas overtook renewables as the primary contributor. In response to these pressures, Public Power Corporation (PPC) announced updated tariff catalogs for September 2026. Despite a 21% increase in the wholesale market compared to August, PPC reduced its ‘myHome Online’ blue fixed tariff to 0.115 €/kWh. This new fixed-rate strategy includes a monthly fixed charge of 3.5 EUR and has impacted the competitive landscape, forcing other providers to adjust. While PPC’s green tariff for consumption up to 200 kWh rose by approximately 7.7% to 14.913 cents/kWh, other providers like Enerwave and Volton reported increases of 7% to 10%, whereas Zenith reported a decrease in its rate for the first 100 kWh of consumption to 19.5 cents/kWh. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis characterized the financially strengthened PPC as a ‘shield of protection’ for Greek families, noting its stability allows it to absorb cost increases. Looking ahead, the Ministry of Environment and Energy has introduced a policy package targeting a 30% reduction in household electricity prices over three years. A key component is a planned 50% reduction in Public Utility Service (YKO) charges for all residential consumers starting January 1, 2027. The government intends to fund these savings through increased renewable energy investment and island grid interconnections.
