In October 2026, announcements were made regarding upcoming film festivals in Greece. The 14th Chania Film Festival is scheduled to begin on October 21 at the Chania Spiritual Center, featuring a program of Greek and international short fiction, documentaries, animation, and student films. The festival will honor Marinella Vlachaki and Dimitris Kalogerakis, and pay tribute to the family of Nikos Koundouros. Following this, the 67th Thessaloniki Film Festival announced its lineup for November 5 to 15, 2026. The event will showcase 26 feature-length and 27 short films, including 19 Greek films being screened for the first time. The festival includes international competitive sections and specialized segments such as ‘Meet the Neighbors+’ and ‘Film Forward’ to promote domestic and regional productions. The 14th Chania Film Festival has officially commenced, running from October 21 to November 1. The opening ceremony at the Chania Spiritual Center featured a screening of Nikos Koundouros’s film ‘The Dragon’. The program includes approximately 400 cinematic works, including animations, short films, documentaries, and classic feature-length productions. In addition to honoring the family of Nikos Koundouros, the festival includes special tributes to Manos Hatzidakis and director Béla Tarr to mark their respective centenaries. The event expects to host around 300 industry professionals for screenings, workshops, and masterclasses, while also providing educational activities for approximately 8,500 students and teachers. The festival is co-organized by the Region of Crete and the municipalities of Chania, Platanias, and Kissamos.
