The Greek financial and insurance sectors are seeing activity related to corporate restructuring and strategic expansion. Bank of Cyprus has announced plans to expand into the Greek market by targeting acquisitions in the insurance and wealth management sectors. CEO Panikos Nikolaou noted the bank intends to focus on large corporations, project financing, and syndicated loans rather than re-establishing a retail banking network. The bank is also prioritizing investments in AI and digital services to compete with fintech firms. In a separate development, the Greek Competition Commission unanimously approved the merger of Crediabank and Evropi Holdings. The Commission ruled that the absorption of Evropi Holdings by Crediabank would not significantly impact competition in the insurance services and brokerage markets due to the limited market shares of the involved entities. Following regulatory approval, CrediaBank shareholders have unanimously approved the merger via the absorption of Evropi Holdings, the parent company of Evropi Insurance and NAK Brokers. The transaction is structured as an all-stock deal involving the issuance of approximately 212.26 million new shares. Post-merger, CrediaBank shareholders will hold 90.386% of the new share capital, while Evropi Holdings shareholders will hold 9.614%. The deal is expected to be completed within five months and is projected to enhance CrediaBank’s earnings per share by approximately 8% by 2027. This move aligns with a broader strategy to become a diversified financial group, following the acquisition of 70% of Pantelakis Securities and a planned acquisition of HSBC Malta by the second quarter of 2026.
