The Greek government is preparing a significant fiscal package for the 2026 Economic Forum and the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF). This approximately 2 billion euro plan, to be presented by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, aims to support the middle class, retirees, and self-employed professionals through VAT reductions and tax reforms. While the government highlights macroeconomic growth, critics have raised concerns regarding structural weaknesses like low productivity. Parallel to these fiscal plans, the National Price Reduction Initiative was launched to stabilize market prices for essential goods. The first phase, which began on August 31, included approximately 1,740 product codes—covering branded goods, private labels, school supplies, and meat—and achieved an average price reduction of 9.5%. This initial phase provided an estimated benefit of approximately 40 euros per shopping basket. A second phase of the initiative is now underway, specifically targeting the November-December 2026 period to support household spending through the holiday season. The Independent Authority for Market Oversight and Consumer Protection is currently recording new participations from businesses to ensure visible price drops. As of the latest reports, 387 product codes have been declared for this phase, consisting of 353 branded products and 34 private-label items. While the initiative extends through the end of 2026, participation remains voluntary, allowing businesses to update, replace, or withdraw specific product codes at the end of each period. Notably, school supplies will not be included in this second phase. Officials expect these participation numbers to increase as the registration process remains open and communications with retailers and market stakeholders intensify.
