The Ministry of Culture’s 27th annual “August Full-Moon” programme, running from 26–30 August 2026, offers free admission to 126 archaeological sites, museums, and monuments across Greece. The peak of the celebrations coincides with the full moon on Friday, 28 August, which is expected to occur at 04:18 Greek time. This event, also known as the ‘Sturgeon Moon’, ‘Buck Moon’, or ‘Oxyrynchos Moon’, will be accompanied by a partial lunar eclipse visible in Greece from approximately 04:30 to 07:19. ~~During this eclipse, nearly the entire lunar disk is expected to pass through Earth's shadow.~~ While 65 locations will remain open for general public visits, 61 sites will host specific cultural events, including theatrical performances, musical concerts, and guided tours. Notable highlights include concerts at the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion, the Minoan Palace of Malia, and the Venetian Harbor of Nafpaktos. A concert by the ERT National Symphony Orchestra is scheduled at the Venetian Harbor following the completion of restoration works on the 600-year-old monument. In the Meteora region, the Theopetra Cave Documentation and Education Center and the Petralona Cave and Museum will offer free night access between 20:00 and 24:00. In Athens, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center will host a film marathon and musical activities. The Acropolis Museum will remain open until midnight, providing free access to its collections and the temporary exhibition ‘Inspiration: Ancient Greek Art in Italy’. Other participating sites include Delphi, Ancient Olympia, and the medieval town of Mystras. Specific musical programming has been highlighted at the Ancient Theatre of Mieza. On August 28, the ensemble ‘Trio Evychon’ performed a program of contemporary Greek art and folk music. This was followed on August 29 by a recital featuring Spanish music, including works by Federico García Lorca, Manuel de Falla, and Joaquín Rodrigo, performed by mezzo-soprano Sandra Piperidou and guitarist Sarantis Agianoglou.
