Greek government agricultural policy and fisheries policy reform efforts
Greek government officials have initiated a series of visits to address challenges within the national agricultural sector. In Serres, Minister of Rural Development and Food Margaritis Schoinas addressed the spread of sheep and goat plague, land registry issues, and the need for structural reforms in payment systems. The Minister indicated that a roadmap for livestock reconstruction, supported by the European Union, would be presented at the Thessaloniki International Fair. Following these regional engagements, the focus shifted to Thessaloniki for policy development. Minister Schoinas led the 4th session of the National Dialogue to shape Greek positions for the post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Additionally, the government moved toward financial support for the sector with the inauguration of the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Fund, intended to fund investments and support future farming and livestock needs. Expanding the scope of policy discussions, Minister Schoinas recently outlined Greece’s national position regarding the new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). He emphasized the necessity of modernizing the Greek fishing fleet through technological advancement, energy transition, and improved vessel safety. Schoinas stressed that policy must support the sector’s unique structure, which relies heavily on small-scale coastal and family-run businesses, while addressing competitive challenges from third-country products. Furthermore, during meetings at the Thessaloniki International Fair with the Secretaries of the seven Decentralized Administrations, Schoinas discussed infrastructure, land protection, and the role of regional administrations in supporting primary production. Officials agreed to hold follow-up working meetings to strengthen cooperation between the Ministry and regional administrations to ensure sustainable development in both agriculture and fisheries.
