Tensions have escalated between the Greek government and judicial bodies regarding institutional roles and integrity. Christoforos Sevastidis, President of the Association of Judges and Prosecutors (EnDE), has criticized Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis for failing to provide “institutional interventions” regarding judicial ethics and lawyer behavior. During an EnDE seminar, Sevastidis expressed dissatisfaction with the Minister’s absence and his written correspondence, stating the Association was not seeking “calm advice” or “institutional advice” from the government. Conflict intensified following an article by Supreme Court Deputy Prosecutor Vassilios Floridis, brother of the Justice Minister, titled “A Vein of Corruption in Justice.” In the piece, Vassilios Floridis alleged a “vein of corruption” within the legal system, specifically criticizing judicial decisions that referred the son of a government official to trial on what he claimed were fabricated judgments. The Supreme Court leadership condemned these remarks, arguing that public commentary on pending cases exceeds legitimate criticism and undermines public trust. While some judicial associations defended the right to critique, others criticized Floridis for intervening publicly in a case he had personally handled. Due to the potential conflict of interest involving the Justice Minister’s brother, Deputy Justice Minister Ioannis Bougas referred the matter to the President of the Council of State, Michalis Pikramenos. A disciplinary investigation into Vassilios Floridis is expected to be led by an appointed Vice President of the Council of State. As the investigation proceeds, Floridis has defended his actions, stating his motivation was to address corruption publicly without targeting specific individuals. He asserted that silence undermines judicial credibility, stating his principle: ‘Where there is a risk of political shadow, abstain. Where there is proven injustice, intervene.’ Various judicial bodies, bar associations, and the Supreme Court have issued statements regarding his decision to speak out on a pending case.
