The Greek government is intensifying efforts to regulate the medical sector, specifically targeting unverified longevity treatments and illegal paramedical activities. Initially, the Ministry of Health announced plans to establish a regulatory framework for anti-aging and regenerative medicine to distinguish scientifically validated procedures from unverified treatments. This includes proposals to regulate medical advertising on social media. Subsequent findings from the National Transparency Authority revealed the scale of unregulated practices. Since 2019, more than 4,300 inspections have uncovered unauthorized activities, such as Botox applications in non-medical settings and fraudulent intravenous therapies. Eleftheria Moschous, President of the Association of Laboratory Physicians of Greece, has described the state of primary healthcare as a ‘jungle’ due to insufficient oversight. In response, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis announced a special committee to establish a formal institutional framework for longevity and regenerative medicine centers. Following his request, the National Transparency Authority launched inspections of 118 medical structures to investigate illegal online advertisements. Recent inspection results have identified significant violations, including a biopathologist’s laboratory operating without a scientific supervisor present and the discovery of six types of injectable aesthetic products, such as hyaluronic acid and fillers, lacking purchase documentation. Investigators also uncovered a physical therapy center utilizing bio-resonance devices and intestinal hydrotherapy machines, as well as a provider offering ‘quantum bio-resonance’ services while operating as a clinic without recognized Greek medical qualifications. Further Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has released initial findings from these investigations. The National Transparency Authority, in coordination with the Hellenic Market Monitoring, Consumer and E-Commerce Protection Authority, has established an inspection program involving mixed teams. Currently, eight inspections are ongoing to address consumer complaints and ensure regulatory compliance. out of 118 identified structures, with a specific program targeting 17 service providers.
