Greek migrant transfer policy in Samos
Overview
Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris has initiated a policy of transferring migrants from Crete to Samos for the purpose of identification and administrative registration. The government maintains that these transfers are temporary and intended to prevent permanent residency increases on Samos, aiming to keep local occupancy levels low by moving individuals to mainland Greece once procedures are complete.
On September 10, 365 migrants arrived at Samos via ferry and were transported to the Samos Closed Controlled Facility (KED). While the Ministry intends for many of these individuals to depart for the mainland shortly after registration, local officials have expressed concerns. The Mayor of East Samos, Paris Papageorgiou, noted that this specific transfer had not been previously discussed with local authorities and requested better coordination to ensure arrivals are balanced by departures to avoid overburdening island infrastructure.
