Legal proceedings have commenced against multiple criminal organizations in Greece. In Athens, the Court of Appeals has begun the trial of 25 defendants accused of operating a criminal ring in Mykonos. This group allegedly included sworn police officers involved in drug trafficking, providing protection to local businesses, and warning entrepreneurs about upcoming police inspections. Central to the case is a former sub-inspector accused of leading the group between 2022 and 2025, and businessman Angelos Giannakopoulos, owner of the “Choriatiko” store chain, who faces charges of bribing a public official for confidential information. During initial proceedings, witnesses including a police officer and a police commander, who is also a defendant, provided testimony. A father of one of the accused also testified, stating his son is a drug user who traveled to Mykonos for work. Separately, Greek prosecutors have filed charges against members of a violent organization in Athens. This group allegedly targeted the hospitality sector through extortion, arson, and grenade attacks. The group reportedly operated under the direction of a 49-year-old inmate managing activities from prison. Following an operation by the Organized Crime Unit, five suspects, aged 17 to 20, were brought before an investigating magistrate, while four other individuals are in custody. The prosecution includes 13 felonies, such as attempted murder, explosions, and the formation of a criminal organization. In Katerini, an investigation by the Hellenic Police Internal Affairs Service has targeted a corruption ring within the local urban planning department. Eleven individuals, including four public officials and seven private engineers, have been arrested and face charges of bribery, forgery, money laundering, and forming a criminal organization. Authorities allege the group operated a system of illegal “tariffs” for building permits and the legalization of unauthorized constructions.
