Political tension has escalated in Greece regarding Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis following controversies surrounding the Tempi train crash investigation. Opposition leader Alexis Tsipras of SYRIZA called for Floridis’s resignation, citing political accountability and the Minister’s previous remarks. Tsipras suggested that if Floridis does not step down, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis should dismiss him. The controversy intensified after the Special Advisory Council of high-ranking judges issued a resolution suggesting that the cleaning of the Tempi crash site may have constituted ‘unlawful interference’ in the investigative process, potentially destroying evidence. Floridis has disputed these findings, defending his actions and labeling those criticizing the site cleaning as ‘conspirators’. In a recent development, the Special Advisory Council of Supreme Court Justices has referred former Deputy Minister Christos Triantopoulos to a Special Court. The Council’s resolution asserts that the covering of the accident scene was an attempt to harm the state and the justice system, noting that these alterations hindered the collection of essential evidence and caused harm to the victims' families. In response to his the Minister’s stance, Anna Papadopoulou, deputy spokesperson for the Hellenic Police, stated has intensified her criticism, describing his comments as a ‘monument to impudence’ and maintaining that the Minister is ‘politically and morally exposed’ and called exposed’, calling for his immediate removal.
