Greek political dispute over Tsipras economic program

Greek political leaders are engaged in a dispute over an economic program proposed by Alexis Tsipras. The government, led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has criticized the proposals as “irresponsible and groundless,” with officials warning they could lead the nation to the “brink of the abyss.”

Tsipras has defended the four-year plan, which aims to transition the economy from a model of low productivity and cheap labor toward increased wages and a stronger social state. He maintains the program will be implemented gradually between 2027 and 2030 and will be subject to evaluation by the Greek Fiscal Council.

As the debate progressed, the Greek Ministry of Finance challenged the program's projected costs. While Tsipras estimated a cost of 7.5 billion euros over four years, government economic staff alleged the actual cost exceeds 40 billion euros. Ministry sources claim the program's cost is being misrepresented by presenting marginal annual increases rather than cumulative totals, specifically citing the impact of proposed salary increases for public health workers and drug policies.
