The Greek political landscape remains defined by intense competition and strategic maneuvering ahead of the 2026 elections. PASOK continues its electoral counter-offensive, focusing on transitioning into a broader movement. Recent criticisms from PASOK have targeted both Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Alexis Tsipras, with spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas claiming they are “setting the bar very low for the country.” Following the formation of the Greek Leftist Coalition (EL.A.S.), PASOK leadership intensified its attacks on Alexis Tsipras, characterizing him as an “unsuccessful Prime Minister and unsuccessful leader of the official opposition.” PASOK officials suggested Tsipras’s new movement is an attempt to fill a void created by his 2019 electoral defeat and accused him of political inconsistency. The party further alleged that policy alignments exist between Tsipras’s new coalition and the ruling New Democracy party regarding pensions, private debt management, and foreign policy. Economic concerns have also intensified following announcements at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF). While Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis defended the government’s social and economic package—emphasizing a 2.2 billion euro distribution to vulnerable groups and a plan to halve Public Utility charges in January—the groups—the measures have faced backlash. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) expressed significant disappointment, though Vasilis Korkidis, President of the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EBEP), suggested the measures aim to provide “fiscal oxygen” to the real economy. Following the 90th TIF, opposition parties have intensified their attacks. PASOK, SYRIZA, Opposition parties, including SYRIZA and the Hellenic Left Coalition (ELAS) ELAS, have accused Prime Minister Mitsotakis of offering “empty promises” regarding inflation and economic inequality. PASOK representative Pavlos Christidis has specifically targeted the government’s failure to provide concrete support for SMEs, citing the lack of abolition of presumptive taxation, the absence of dedicated business bank accounts, and insufficient reductions in employer social security contributions. Furthermore, PASOK has expanded its critique to include a crisis in public education, citing bureaucracy and resource shortages. The party has also proposed new platform measures, such as protecting primary residences, reinstating the 13th month pension and salary, and returning minimum wage negotiations to social partners. Regarding the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture and the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Christidis continues to demand clarity on the oversight and transparency of the ten-year, 10-million-euro funding plan.
