Following the August 21 presentation of new regulations aimed at making football ‘more attractive’ through expanded VAR protocols and restricted captain-only communication, the Hellenic Football Federation’s Professional Football Committee has reached a decision regarding derby officiating. On August 27, the committee decided to maintain the use of foreign referees for major derbies in the Stoiximan Super League. A proposal to allow Greek referees to officiate all league matches will be reconsidered before the end of the first half of the season, contingent upon appropriate conditions. In terms of officiating technology, the committee approved the introduction of Goal Line Cameras. These are described as distinct from existing Goal Line Technology and are expected to be implemented as soon as possible, potentially starting from the quarter-finals of the Superbet Greek Cup. Unlike automated Goal Line Technology, these cameras are intended to support the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system by providing clearer images and additional viewing angles. This technological upgrade aims to assist VAR officials in making more accurate manual determinations during critical goal-line incidents, thereby increasing transparency and fairness. Meanwhile, referee appointments for the second matchday of the Super League have been released. The list includes several officials with controversial histories in specific matchups, such as Stavros Tsimenteridis, who is scheduled to officiate the Volos vs. Iraklis match following previous disputes involving Volos regarding his officiating decisions.
