Greek swimming safety warnings

Entities: Attica Region · Attica · Greek Ministry of Health · Irini Agapidaki · Eirini Agapidaki

Overview

In late July 2026 Greek health officials highlighted swimmer health risks in two separate settings. On 24 July, experts warned that pool water can harbor sweat, sunscreen, skin cells and resilient microbes such as Cryptosporidium, stressing that chlorine does not instantly eliminate all pathogens. They recommended showering before and after swimming, avoiding open wounds in the water, thorough foot washing, refraining from urinating in pools, promptly changing out of wet swimwear, cleaning swimsuits with detergent and drying ears to prevent infections.

Five days later, on 29 July, the Deputy Minister of Health, Irini Agapidaki, issued a circular barring swimming in numerous coastal sites across the Attica region because water quality failed to meet safety standards. The ban covered ports, moorings, ship‑yards, and stretches from Piraeus to Perama, as well as specific harbours and areas near storm‑water outfalls and wastewater‑treatment discharges. Local health inspectors were instructed to coordinate with municipalities and port authorities to post signage and enforce the restrictions.

Together, the two advisories illustrate a widening public‑health response in Greece, moving from individual pool‑hygiene guidance to region‑wide prohibitions on open‑water swimming due to contaminated water conditions.
