Greece is implementing new transportation and safety regulations. An EU regulation regarding end-of-life vehicles, effective as of August 13, 2026, impacts approximately 2.5 million vehicles in Greece. This rule aims to remove unsafe cars and curb illegal trade by defining when a vehicle can no longer be legally operated or repaired. Vehicles may be classified as ‘end-of-life’ if they lack a valid technical inspection for more than two consecutive years without a declaration of electronic inactivity. Additionally, the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has issued Ministerial Decision Δ30/45652/2026, requiring all motorized road vehicles, excluding motorcycles, to carry first aid kits that meet DIN 13164:2022 or equivalent ISO standards. Effective January 1, 2027, these updated standards introduce stricter specifications for kit contents and marking. Required items include an isothermal rescue blanket, adhesive tape, 14 adhesive dressings of various sizes, four sterile individual dressings, a sterile burn dressing, six sterile wound compresses, five elastic bandages of different widths, a triangular bandage, trauma scissors, four disposable gloves, two cleansing wipes, and two medical masks. According to the Government Gazette, the kits must function as a complete first aid station rather than a simple pouch. All materials must comply with the Medical Device Regulation (MDR 2017/745) and carry the CE mark. Manolis Katsarakis, General Secretary of the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association, noted that drivers must ensure kits meet these specific requirements. The new standard mandates 16 different medical technology items. To ensure compliance, external packaging must bear the DIN 13164:2022 marking, while individual components like sterile gauze must carry the CE marking. Furthermore, packaging must be designed to protect contents from dust and the environmental conditions found inside a vehicle. Notably, the kits are should not intended include medications due to contain medications, as high temperatures inside vehicles can compromise their safety. temperature risks. Drivers are advised to check inspect current kits for completeness, condition, and expiration dates before the end of 2026 to ensure they meet the new requirements or replace them entirely. 2026, specifically checking for correct quantities, completeness, and sterility expiration dates, which typically occur every five years.
