Overview
Researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich have developed a method to produce green methanol in water-scarce regions by extracting both CO2 and water directly from the atmosphere. This approach, known as the DryHy process, utilizes Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology with specific sorption materials that absorb moisture from the air to be used in Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOEC).
A techno-economic study modeling over 20,000 regions across 78 countries found that in 97% of areas facing water stress, the air provides sufficient moisture to sustain methanol production. The research suggests that even in the 606 driest locations, the water gap can be bridged by utilizing water storage and operating plants during more humid hours. The study concludes that while wind and solar quality dictate costs, water scarcity is not a fundamental barrier to green methanol production.
