The German Green Party has faced leadership resignations in two different state-level factions following allegations of harassment. In Lower Saxony, Julia Willie Hamburg resigned immediately from her position in the state parliament faction after a sworn affidavit alleging verbal sexual harassment emerged. Anne Kura and Detlev Schulz-Hendel have been confirmed to take over leadership of the faction. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Constanze Oehlrich resigned as the parliamentary group leader approximately one month before the state elections scheduled for September 20. Her resignation followed renewed media reports and correspondence from anti-discrimination advisory centers regarding allegations of power abuse and persistent unwanted romantic advances toward a younger male colleague over several years. Reports indicate Oehlrich allegedly made inappropriate comments regarding a staff member’s clothing. While a previous legal review by a law firm had dismissed the claims as finding no violation of the General Act on Equal Treatment or improper leadership behavior, Oehlrich stated her resignation was a decision to protect her family, herself, and her faction from ‘further injuries.’ She maintained that her departure was ‘expressly not a confirmation of the allegations made against me’ and reiterated that the claims had been investigated and dismissed as unfounded. Following her resignation, Claudia Müller has taken over as the Green Party’s top candidate for the upcoming election.
