Gribshunden shipwreck archaeological discoveries

Overview

Archaeologists investigating the Gribshunden shipwreck, a 15th-century Danish flagship that sank off the coast of Ronneby, Sweden, have recovered significant artifacts. The vessel, which sank following an onboard fire, was identified as the Gribshunden in 2013.

Recent findings include a wooden box attributed to German Landsknechte, mercenaries who served various European rulers. The box contained casting molds, lead plates, and tools used for manufacturing lead bullets for early firearms, providing insight into the logistical organization of weaponry on board.

Researchers also recovered well-preserved fragments of high-quality chainmail featuring riveted metal rings. Additionally, wood samples indicate the oak used in the ship's construction was felled along the Meuse River between 1482 and 1483.
