According to the Berufsgenossenschaft Handel und Warenlogistik (BGHW), approximately 4,000 grilling accidents occur annually, with about ten percent resulting in severe burns. Key safety recommendations include never using flammable liquids like spirits or gasoline to ignite or replenish charcoal, as these can cause uncontrollable flare-ups. For gas grills, experts advise storing gas cylinders only outdoors in well-ventilated, shaded areas.

Additionally, the organization Das sichere Haus (DSH) warns against using charcoal grills in enclosed spaces such as garages, garden sheds, or party tents. Incomplete combustion can lead to a rapid buildup of carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas that can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, or even death by blocking oxygen transport in the blood.
