Groningen-Leer cross-border rail reconnection

Overview

Passenger rail services between Groningen, Netherlands, and Leer, Germany, are scheduled to resume on October 5. This restoration follows an eleven-year interruption caused by severe damage to the Friesenbrücke bridge in 2015.

Infrastructure upgrades for the reconnection include the construction of a new lift-and-turn bridge at Friesenbrücke, new tracks, overhead lines, and the addition of stations in Bunde and Ihrhove. These improvements are part of the ‘Wunderline’ project to establish a fast international connection between Groningen and Bremen.

While services will run once per hour, weekday daytime travelers will be required to transfer in Winschoten. This necessity stems from a speed restriction near Hurdegaryp, where ProRail reduced maximum speeds from 120 to 80 km/h due to unstable soil and high groundwater levels. Direct service will remain available during the first two morning trips and the last two evening trips on weekdays, as well as once per hour on weekends.
