Grosseto demographic ageing and health care challenges

In July 2026, union leaders highlighted a severe demographic and economic decline in the province of Grosseto, noting a loss of younger residents, a rising share of pension incomes, and an ageing population projected to grow by half by 2050. To address the growing care needs, the national PNRR plan funded the construction of community‑care hubs, hospitals and operation centres, with unions urging adequate staffing of doctors and nurses.

Two weeks later, retirees in Grosseto protested the high cost of public nursing homes, which exceed typical pension incomes, and criticized limited access to the newly built Casa di comunità Hub, citing insufficient parking, restricted service hours, and inadequate capacity. Union representatives called on local and health authorities to expand services and improve affordability, underscoring the gap between the reform’s ambitions and the immediate needs of an expanding elderly population.
