Overview

Twelve years after Grupo México's subsidiary, Buenavista del Cobre, released approximately 40 million liters of acidic copper-sulfate solution into the Sonora and Bacanuchi rivers in 2014, local communities continue to face significant ecological and health challenges. The spill affected over 270 km of river, impacting approximately 22,000 people across eight municipalities, including Cananea, Arizpe, and Ures.

While residents report ongoing health problems and unsafe water for drinking and irrigation, the Mexican federal and state governments have introduced an integral mitigation plan. This strategy includes the installation of 16 new water treatment plants and the construction of a specialized hospital in Ures, featuring a heavy metal laboratory.

Financial efforts involve a negotiated fund to support public health, potable water access, and environmental restoration. Recent developments indicate the remediation program has entered a second stage, led by Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and the Sonora state government. This phase focuses on soil recovery and water quality monitoring following technical diagnostic work conducted in February. Using X-ray fluorescence technology, officials identified heavy metal concentrations in soil and sediment across municipalities such as Cananea, Bacoachi, Arizpe, Aconchi, and Ures.

As of August 2026, a new phase of remediation for the Río Sonora basin is set to launch in September 2026, backed by an initial investment of 654 million pesos. Part of the ‘Plan de Justicia para Cananea’, this stage focuses on the technical remediation of soils and sediments. SEMARNAT Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra and Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño stated that the first phase of these technical works is expected to conclude by the end of 2026.
