The Companhia Estadual de Águas e Esgotos do Rio de Janeiro (Cedae) scheduled annual preventive maintenance for the Guandu Water System to begin at 4:00 AM on Tuesday, November 3. The operation is intended to prepare the treatment station for higher water consumption during the summer season. As of Tuesday morning, water production was suspended, affecting the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro, Belford Roxo, Duque de Caxias, Mesquita, Nilópolis, Nova Iguaçu, Queimados, and São João de Meriti. The maintenance involves approximately 500 employees performing inspections, cleaning, and repairs, including the installation of a large-scale macrometer. While technical services were expected to conclude by early Wednesday morning, residents in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area and Baixada Fluminense have continued to face water shortages. Concessionaires noted that supply normalization may take up to 72 hours following the resumption of production, especially in elevated areas or at the ends of distribution networks. Water trucks are being prioritized for hospitals and emergency units. Iguá Rio has since reported that scheduled interventions, including connections to a new large-scale pipeline in Outeiro, were finished ahead of schedule. Distribution is expected to resume gradually once the Cedae-managed Guandu System reaches 100% capacity.
