The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) continues to manage diverse community outreach, law enforcement, and emergency response activities across Portugal. Law enforcement efforts have seen significant activity in recent weeks. A weekly report from July 31 to August 6 recorded 583 arrests nationwide, including 247 for driving under the influence and 125 for driving without a license. During this period, authorities seized over 53,000 doses of cocaine and 22 firearms, while identifying 8,691 traffic infractions. Recent operations have intensified in several districts. In the Santarém district, enforcement activity between August 17 and 23 resulted in 34 arrests for offenses including drug trafficking and resistance to authority, alongside 639 traffic violations, including 87 cases of expired vehicle inspections. violations. In Sines, a 61-year-old man was placed in preventive detention following the seizure of a firearm, ammunition, and over 1,000 doses of cocaine. In the Faro district, operations in Albufeira and Loulé led to 16 arrests, primarily for drug trafficking and drunk driving. A high-profile incident occurred in the Albufeira Oura bar district on August 25. A 35-year-old driver, who tested positive for a blood alcohol level of 1.29 g/l, ignored orders to stop and drove toward pedestrians and police. After GNR officers fired shots into the air to halt the vehicle, the driver crashed into another car and attempted to flee on foot. The hit-and-run injured 12 people, including two GNR officers; two victims sustained serious injuries and remain hospitalized at the Hospital de Portimão. The driver was apprehended by the Public Order Intervention Group and faces charges of aggravated assault, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence. The Minister of Home Affairs, Luís Neves, condemned the incident and promised a full investigation. In community policing, the GNR’s Criminal Prevention and Community Policing Section held bullying awareness sessions for children in Serpa.
