Members of the Guardia di Finanza held religious ceremonies across several Italian cities to honor their patron saint, San Matteo. In Perugia and Ragusa, ceremonies were held at the Basilica of San Pietro and the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, respectively. Officials noted the connection between the saint, a former tax collector, and the corps’ mission to fight tax evasion and protect economic legality. Subsequent celebrations took place in Rieti and Fermo. In Rieti, the Mass honored the historical recognition of San Matteo’s patronage by a 1934 papal document. In Fermo, the ceremony included a tribute to members of the corps who lost their lives to terrorism or organized crime, with calls for officers to maintain social awareness in their economic-financial duties. Recent commemorations expanded to other provinces. In Isernia, ceremonies at the Church of the Sacred Heart honored the values of loyalty and sacrifice. In Messina, celebrations included a mass at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Montalto and a commemorative event in Torre Faro. The latter event honored Major Giuseppe Rando, a financier who received a Bronze Medal for Bravery in 1899 for rescuing fishing crews during a storm, marked by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
