Ahead of a Concacaf Nations League match on September 28, El Salvador coach Hernán Darío Gómez reported that his team had shown progress and improved organization, though he noted they were not favorites for the competition. Gómez also praised Guatemala’s recent performance against Jamaica, stating they deserved a better result despite their loss. During the match at El Trébol stadium, Guatemala secured a 6-0 victory over El Salvador, marking their first win of the 2026-2027 tournament. Darwin Lom opened the scoring in the 8th minute, followed by Rubio Rubín in the 28th. William Jehú Fajardo scored a hat-trick with goals in the 32nd, 89th, and stoppage time, while Jorge Aparicio added a goal in the 56th minute. Guatemala coach Luis Fernando Tena attributed the win to clinical finishing and tactical control. The heavy defeat led to questions regarding El Salvador’s tactical setup, with Gómez describing the result as a “disaster” and noting that such heavy defeats can be dangerous for coaching staff. He also observed that his team was outperformed in speed and strength. Following the win, Guatemala moved into second place in Group B. B and began preparing to face Suriname.
