Guatemala Fuego volcano eruption 2026

Entities: Conred · Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología (Insiv · Guatemala · Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres · El Porvenir (village)

Overview

The Fuego volcano, Guatemala's most active volcano, began erupting on the morning of 3 August 2026. Explosive activity produced ash plumes reaching 6‑7 km altitude and pyro‑glacial flows that prompted the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction to raise an orange alert, later upgraded to red for the departments of Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla. Evacuations were ordered for villages such as El Porvenir and Las Lajitas, moving roughly 1,400‑1,700 people to temporary shelters, while schools closed and Route 14 was shut.

The eruption continued for about 50 hours, spreading ash over a wide area and threatening air travel. On 5 August, the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology confirmed that activity had ceased and the volcano returned to normal levels. No fatalities or material damage were reported, though authorities warned that residual lava flows and ash could still pose risks. Emergency teams remained on standby to assist evacuees returning to their homes and to monitor the volcano for any further activity.
