Guatemala infrastructure and construction development

Overview

Guatemala is experiencing a period of significant growth in its construction and infrastructure sectors. A Central Bank report indicates that construction material imports, particularly non-metallic minerals like cement, lime, and gypsum, have driven a substantial portion of goods import growth. This surge is linked to a boom in real estate, commercial centers, and industrial storage, alongside major civil engineering works such as the Escuintla-Puerto Quetzal highway.

Complementing this private sector activity, the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure, and Housing (CIV) has reported progress on numerous public works. Minister Norma Zea recently stated that the ministry has reached a 53% budget execution rate, representing a 7.17% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Currently, between 45 and 47 road projects are in progress, following the completion of 16 works earlier in the year. The ministry also expects to reactivate 18 additional projects.

Strategic developments include urban congestion relief in the capital and improved connectivity in provinces like El Progreso and Petén. Looking toward 2027, the CIV has announced plans for 225 new road projects involving technical studies and construction. High priority upcoming works include the expansion of the CA-9 North highway from El Rancho to Teculután, a project exceeding Q900 million that includes the reconstruction of the El Güijo bridge. The ministry continues to work on geometric solutions and designs to intervene in various points of the national road network.
