Guatemalan military modernization and U.S. cooperation
Overview
Following the lifting of a 49-year U.S. arms embargo in March, Guatemala has begun a series of military acquisitions to modernize its armed forces.
In September, the country received its first shipment of equipment, including over 2,000 M4 rifles, machine guns, and grenade launchers. This initial delivery, valued at over $5 million, is part of a larger plan to acquire 14,000 rifles to combat organized crime, drug trafficking, and enhance border security.
By October, the modernization efforts expanded to include aviation. The Guatemalan Army acquired four military aircraft from the United States for approximately $30 million. The fleet consists of one Twin Otter for transport and medical evacuations, and three Turbo Thrush models specifically configured for aerial forest fire fighting to support ground teams and reduce military casualties during fire operations.
