Fiorella Ycaza, a businesswoman and wife of current Guayaquil Mayor Aquiles Alvarez, has entered the race for the Mayoralty of Guayaquil. Following her initial pre-registration announcement on August 13, 2026, Ycaza officially registered her candidacy at the Guayas Provincial Electoral Delegation under the Ecuadorian Socialist Party (PSE). Ycaza’s campaign aims to maintain the political continuity of the current administration and its public works. Her candidacy is viewed as an attempt by the Revolución Ciudadana movement to maintain political continuity. This move follows shifts in the correísta electoral strategy, which had previously supported other candidates. The mayoral bid occurs amid significant legal challenges for the current administration. Mayor Alvarez is in preventive detention and facing multiple criminal proceedings, including the ‘Grillete’, ‘Goleada’, and ‘Triple A’ ~~cases.~~ cases, which involve allegations related to money laundering and illegal hydrocarbon distribution.
