Guinea transport strike over official extortion
Overview
In early September 2026, Guinean taxi and transport drivers launched a general strike to protest the proliferation of illegal checkpoints and systematic extortion by police and customs officials. Protesters reported that drivers were forced to pay arbitrary fees at numerous checkpoints, sometimes reaching up to 400,000 Guinean francs, which left them operating at a loss. This action paralyzed major road corridors connecting Guinea to Senegal and the Gambia, as well as the route between Mamou and Conakry.
Following unsuccessful meetings in Koundara between transport stakeholders and security officials, union leaders eventually instructed drivers to temporarily suspend the strike on September 11, 2026. This suspension was intended as a gesture to facilitate further negotiations with regional authorities. While transport services have begun to resume on strategic routes connecting Labé to Bamako, Conakry, and Nzérékoré, drivers noted that their demands have not yet been met. Cross-border services to Senegal and Gambia remain subject to ongoing consultations.
