Gujarat food safety enforcement crackdown

Overview

The death of a five-year-old girl in Surat, Gujarat, due to suspected food poisoning has triggered a large-scale food safety enforcement campaign across the state.

The incident began after a family from the Varachha area consumed a meal at Sheetal Restaurant on August 15. Following the onset of symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, the child was declared dead at Sadvichar Hospital. In response, the Surat Municipal Corporation sealed the restaurant after identifying hygiene lapses and collecting food samples for testing.

This event prompted a statewide crackdown by Gujarat authorities, resulting in the closure of 137 restaurants. In the Surat region alone, municipal teams inspected more than 200 establishments, destroying 548 kg of unfit food and issuing notices to 128 businesses. The enforcement drive has included license suspensions and inspections of various hotels to address violations such as improper food storage and pest presence.
