Heavy monsoon rains in early July 2026 triggered mass evacuations across Gujarat. State authorities issued port warnings, moved more than 16,500 residents to safety and rescued 41 people. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inspected the emergency operations centre, placed districts on high alert and deployed two army units to Ahmedabad, Navsari and Surat, with Indian Air Force helicopters on standby. By the end of the month, floodwaters had affected 201 talukas, about 61.5% of the season’s total. On 31 July, intense rain in Sabarkantha and Vadodara districts caused flash flooding, waist‑deep water on streets, water‑logged roads and damage to homes. A car was swept away in Idar, and vehicles were stranded in Dhantej village. The state weather department issued a red alert and warned that more heavy rain is expected in the coming days, urging residents to avoid flooded areas and seek shelter. On 1‑2 August, the Kim River in Surat swelled dramatically, prompting a red alert and the closure of schools and factories. More than 4,000 residents from flood‑prone villages were evacuated. State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Army conducted rescue operations, extracting about 125 civilians and rescuing dozens of others. Relief shelters, including one at Sunrise School in Kosamba, were opened. Major roads such as Gayakwadi road were submerged, forcing detours. The period also saw a murder‑suicide in Varachha and a pioneering medical transport in which a donor heart was moved from Surat to Ahmedabad via the Vande Bharat Express, the first organ transfer on India’s rail network.
