Gun violence incidents have been reported across various districts in Chile, involving both stray bullets and targeted attacks. In late August, a five-year-old girl was injured in the Cerro Navia district when a stray bullet from a vehicle-based shooting became lodged in her femur. Authorities, including the Organized Crime and Homicide Team (ECOH) and the PDI, launched an investigation into the incident. By late September, further shootings occurred in Talca and Renca. In Talca, an armed individual opened fire on two people, resulting in one death and one injury. In Renca, a public altercation escalated into a shooting that left three men injured, with one person in critical condition. On September 27, a security operation in the Lo Espejo commune turned fatal. While officers from the 42nd Patrol Police Station were conducting identity checks in the Las Dunas sector, an individual identified as Brayan Farías Díaz, a Venezuelan national in an irregular migratory situation with a prior criminal record, reportedly fired approximately 20 shots at the officers ~~while attempting to evade control.~~ using a firearm equipped with a modified extended magazine. Public Security Minister Martín Arrau condemned the attack, stating that “an attack on a police officer is an attack on the entire country,” and pledged to reinforce operational, legal, and material support for law enforcement.
