April 2026 saw a brief 11,000‑TEU surge at Gwadar tied to temporary cargo diversions in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting analysts to caution that the port’s draft, berth capacity and security issues limited its prospects as a durable trade hub. In July 2026 Pakistan launched its first international ship‑bunkering operation at Gwadar, supplying 2,500 t of Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil to the LNG carrier ENUGU, and formalised six overland road corridors linking Karachi, Port Qasim and Gwadar with Iran’s Gabd and Taftan border posts. Uzbekistan began using the routes, moving over 14,000 t of goods and projecting up to $3 bn annually in transit services. Concurrently, Pakistan accelerated rail upgrades on the Karachi‑Peshawar, Rohri‑Taftan and Thar‑Coal lines under a $7 bn IMF programme, positioning its ports as regional logistics hubs. On 29 July, Pakistan offered Kazakhstan access to its ports and discussed joint free‑zone ventures, underscoring the ambition to serve as a permanent gateway for Central Asian trade. On 31 July, Saudi Arabia announced a 14‑nation maritime coalition to protect the Bab al‑Mandab Strait, Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Pakistan joined the coalition, which aims to safeguard brings together fourteen founding members—including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Bangladesh, Egypt and Pakistan—to defend these waterways against Houthi attacks. The charter stresses a defensive posture, compliance with the UN Charter and freedom of navigation navigation; the United Arab Emirates and commercial shipping. Oman chose not to participate. The security framework is expected to complement Pakistan’s overland and rail initiatives, enhancing the overall resilience of the Gwadar‑centric trade corridor.
