Gwangju firefighter bullying investigation
Entities: Late firefighter A · South Korean government · Gwangju Fire Department
Overview
In early July 2026, a 20‑year‑old female firefighter from Gwangju’s Mines Fire Station died after reporting severe workplace bullying, including forced drinking and other hierarchical abuse. A joint government inspection verified most of the allegations and recommended disciplinary measures against 17 fire‑department officials. The victim’s family also lodged a complaint alleging that anonymous civil‑servant users defamed the deceased on an internal bulletin board, prompting a police probe to identify the authors.
By late July, the disciplinary process moved forward. The Gwangju Fire Department’s disciplinary committee convened, dismissing two officials, imposing severe penalties on twelve, and issuing lighter sanctions to three. Additional internal procedures were launched against two agency members, while the remaining fifteen officials remained under committee jurisdiction. The actions reflect a broader effort to address the culture of bullying within the fire service and to hold responsible parties accountable.
