The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul is a historical monument representing the architectural intersection of Christian and Islamic history. Originally a Byzantine cathedral commissioned by Emperor Justinian I, it was converted into a mosque following the Ottoman conquest in 1453. Recent developments involve a major restoration project at the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque. Following advanced modeling and static analysis, experts identified a critical need to reinforce the eastern semi-dome, which is considered a vulnerable point in potential earthquake scenarios. This phase focuses on involves the structural reinforcement installation of the eastern semi-dome a steel working platform to allow for structural strengthening and the mihrab section following technical analyses. The project includes the conservation of mosaics and ornamental decorations, as well as the cleaning mosaics, calligraphy, and repair of historical marble surfaces. To protect the site, workers are utilizing a steel platform site's historical integrity, specialized printed tarpaulins will be used to maintain visual continuity, and a multi-layered raised floor system to prevent damage will be implemented to protect the original 1,500-year-old marble flooring. The work is being supervised by Simultaneously, restoration efforts continue on the main dome, including mosaic conservation using ‘facing’ techniques and the installation of a temporary steel roof. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has stated that these comprehensive works, overseen by a scientific committee, are being conducted according to a strict schedule to ensure that worship the monument is preserved for future generations.
