Haiti gang violence and political instability
Overview
Gang violence in Haiti is causing significant social and political disruption. In Port-au-Prince, rising insecurity has hindered traditional Gede spiritual celebrations, as armed groups have made several cemeteries inaccessible to practitioners of Haitian Vodou.
Concurrently, Wilson Joseph, leader of the 400 Mawozos organization, has accused Haitian political leaders of arming gang members to sabotage elections and protect specific interests. Joseph alleged that politicians have provided weapons to youths to carry out sabotage against opposing parties.
Violence has also escalated in the Arcahaie region. Following a police operation on October 29 that resulted in the deaths of approximately 20 gang members, including a leader known as “Galaxy,” gang members attacked authorities.
