Chadian troops have begun arriving in Haiti to support the United Nations-backed Gang Suppression Force. The deployment of approximately 300 to 350 soldiers is intended to assist local authorities in combating armed gangs that control much of Port-au-Prince. This mission aims to reach a total of 5,500 personnel, though current numbers remain low, limiting large-scale operational capacity. Amidst this security buildup, Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader has urged the United Nations to accelerate the deployment of resources. Speaking at the 81st UN General Assembly, Abinader noted that the force is currently operating with only one-fifth of its authorized personnel and warned that its mandate is set to expire on September 30. He called for the completion of troop deployments, the enforcement of an arms embargo to target gang financiers, and the strengthening of Haitian judicial and security institutions. Abinader emphasized that the solution must be found within Haiti, warning that the Dominican Republic cannot bear the consequences of the neighboring nation’s instability. He also stated that his country will continue to protect its borders and enforce migration laws to ensure regional security. The security situation remains critical as Haiti prepares for general elections scheduled for December 13. Gang control over at least 23 municipalities continues to hinder the electoral process. Additionally, the humanitarian crisis has resulted in approximately 1.5 million displaced persons, roughly half of whom are minors, and ongoing violence, including a recent massacre in Kenscoff where gangs killed at least 47 people, including five children.
