HAL indigenous aircraft production and delivery

Overview

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has reached several milestones in its indigenous aerospace programs. The company completed the delivery of the original LCA Tejas Mk1 contract, including two twin-seater trainers, and delivered the first batch of three HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF). Additionally, HAL provided four Dhruv Next Generation helicopters to Pawan Hans Limited for commercial use.

While the Mk1 program has concluded, the induction of the advanced Tejas Mk1A variant has progressed significantly. Previously, the program faced delays due to the integration of Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar systems and engine supply issues. However, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Vice Chief of the IAF, stated that the shortage of engines from the United States has been addressed and engines have now been installed on the aircraft.

The jets are currently undergoing intensive testing to meet operational, safety, and technical requirements. Air Marshal Dixit noted that there are approximately “two or three remaining technical points to resolve,” which are expected to be cleared within one to two months. The Tejas Mk1A features upgraded avionics, AESA radar, and enhanced Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile capabilities.

With the delivery of the final Tejas Mk1 Trainer aircraft, the total number of Tejas Mk1 aircraft received by the IAF has reached 40. As the Mk1 program concludes, focus has shifted to large-scale Mk1A production to address fighter squadron shortages. Looking forward, HAL has completed the Tejas Mk2 airframe assembly, targeting a first flight in 2027. The company is also developing prototypes for the ‘CATS Warrior’ autonomous drone and aims to increase non-military revenue by expanding the use of the Dhruv NG in civilian sectors.
