On October 9, 2026, commemorations were held in Halle, Germany, to mark the seventh anniversary of the 2019 antisemitic attack on a synagogue that killed two people. The memorial included wreath-laying and a minute of silence, attended by various political and religious figures. During the event, Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, an AfD member of the state parliament and Vice President of the new Landtag, attempted to enter the synagogue grounds. He was blocked by a human chain of protesters, including members of the Jewish Students' Union Germany (JSUD), who aimed to prevent the far-right party from ‘hijacking’ the memorial. Police described Tillschneider, who intended to represent the protest as a spontaneous assembly, and Tillschneider Parliament President, eventually left the site following mediation. In the aftermath, Tillschneider described the protesters as a ‘group of fanatical students’ and referred to the 2019 attack as a ‘terrible rampage,’ notably omitting terms such as ‘antisemitic’ or ‘right-wing extremist.’ Max Privorozki, chairman of Following the Jewish Community of Halle, expressed understanding for blockade, JSUD Chairman Ron Dekel defended the students' motivations while noting that he generally rejects blockades. He also clarified action, stating that while right-wing extremists have no official ban on Tillschneider existed, the politician had not received place in a personal invitation synagogue, especially in front of survivors and victims' families. Dekel further asserted that right-wing antisemitism, specifically from the AfD, represents the ‘greatest threat to Jewish life in Germany.’ New tensions have emerged as JSUD members report receiving death threats and increased hostility. Concurrently, the Halle public event. prosecutor's office is investigating blockade participants for suspected insults after they reportedly referred to Tillschneider as a ‘Nazi.’ The JSUD has indicated intentions to involve the police regarding the reported death threats.
