Former FC Bayern Munich physician Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt is the subject of an upcoming the Sky documentary, ‘Müller-Wohlfahrt – Der Arzt der Champions’, scheduled for release which was released on October 23. In anticipation of the film, Müller-Wohlfahrt has reflected on his career and his contentious relationship with former coach Pep Guardiola, describing the friction as ‘very, very intense’. He alleged that Guardiola frequently criticized his work and attempted to undermine his medical authority. A central point of the dispute involved midfielder Thiago Alcántara; Müller-Wohlfahrt claimed Guardiola bypassed his advice by having the player undergo training in Spain despite a ligament injury, a decision he alleges resulted in a complete tear. The tension reportedly escalated after a Champions League loss to FC Porto, during which Guardiola blamed the physician for the defeat, contributing to Müller-Wohlfahrt leaving the club in April 2015. Beyond the dispute with Guardiola, the 84-year-old physician expressed lasting disappointment regarding his departure from FC Bayern Munich. He criticized former club executives, specifically Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, for a perceived lack of support during his exit. Despite these grievances, Müller-Wohlfahrt stated he remains a lifelong fan of the club and noted he would not refuse to help Guardiola in the future, though he would use such opportunities to discuss his medical evolution. The documentary also provides an in-depth look at his career as a renowned sports orthopedist for global stars such as Usain Bolt, Wladimir Klitschko, and Manuel Neuer. It explores his unconventional medical methods, including his use of Actovegin serum and his ability to ‘see’ anatomy through palpation, noting that he has often been viewed as an outsider by mainstream medicine.
