Hanwha expansion in U.S. defense market

Overview

South Korean conglomerate Hanwha Group is pursuing an aggressive expansion into the United States defense market through significant investments and acquisitions.

In August 2026, Hanwha submitted a non-binding offer of between $1.05 billion and $1.20 billion to acquire Austal USA, a major defense contractor based in Alabama that builds vessels for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. This move follows Hanwha’s 2024 acquisition of Philly Shipyard and aims to broaden its maritime capabilities.

To further accelerate this expansion, Hanwha announced an investment of up to $299 million into its U.S. subsidiaries, including Hanwha Defense USA and Hanwha Future Proof. In the land defense sector, Hanwha Defense USA secured a $103 million U.S. Army contract to develop prototypes for the Mobile Tactical Cannon program. The company is also exploring the establishment of ammunition and propellant production facilities in Arkansas to create a comprehensive local supply chain.
