Hanwha Ocean subcontractor labor disputes
Overview
Labor disputes involving subcontractors at the Hanwha Ocean shipyard in Geoje have escalated from allegations of safety concealment to direct collective bargaining.
In mid-September, the Korean Metal Workers' Union accused a subcontractor of concealing industrial accidents to avoid penalties. The union alleged that a female worker was instructed to claim injuries sustained on-site occurred elsewhere to prevent reporting to the Ministry of Employment and Labor and Hanwha Ocean. Hanwha Ocean initiated an internal review, stating they would take strict action, including potential contract termination, if concealment is proven.
By October, subcontracted workers initiated high-altitude protests on cranes and factory roofs to demand improved wages, welfare, and employment security. Following a court decision requiring Hanwha Ocean to include certain subcontracted workers in collective bargaining, negotiations have commenced. While some union officials ended their protests to participate in the first round of bargaining, several workers continue their demonstrations.
