Hate crime trends in New York
Overview
New York has seen a rise in hate crimes, particularly antisemitic incidents. In September, Governor Kathy Hochul announced $70 million in state grants through the Securing Communities Against Hate Crimes (SCAHC) program to protect vulnerable nonprofit organizations, including houses of worship and cultural institutions. These funds are intended for physical security upgrades, cybersecurity, and training.
By October, NYPD statistics indicated that hate crimes increased by nearly 13% during the first nine months of the year. Of the 463 recorded hate crimes, approximately 53% were classified as anti-Jewish. While Jewish residents comprise roughly 10% of the city's population, they accounted for more than half of the confirmed hate crimes. Local polling suggests a significant impact on the community, with over half of Jewish voters reporting they feel unsafe.
