The death of actress Hayden Panettiere at age 36 has prompted renewed scrutiny regarding the well-being of child stars from the 2000s era. Panettiere, whose career included roles in ‘Heroes’ and ‘Nashville’, died following a suspected overdose that led to cardiac arrest. Following an investigation, the Greenville County Coroner's Office in South Carolina has officially ruled Panettiere’s death an accidental overdose. Toxicology reports confirmed the cause of death was the toxic effects of a combination of drugs, including fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. The autopsy revealed no signs of physical trauma, and the coroner's office has since administratively closed the case. Investigators noted they found no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances, ruling out both homicide and suicide. Panettiere was found unresponsive at a South Carolina residence on August 16. Newly released 911 ~~audio and police reports provide~~ audio, obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request, provides further details regarding the emergency response. Recordings indicate that after Panettiere was found unconscious, her partner, Brian Hickerson, administered Narcan, while his brother, Zach Hickerson, attempted CPR under the instruction of a 911 operator. Despite these efforts, she could not be resuscitated. Investigators reported finding blue pressed pills and a straw at the scene that tested positive for fentanyl, as well as a white powder in a glasses case within her luggage. The release of the 911 audio follows public discussions regarding Panettiere’s history with Brian Hickerson, including a 2020 restraining order involving allegations of domestic abuse. Panettiere’s father, Skip Panettiere, and Hickerson confirmed she had recently completed a two-to-three-week rehabilitation program in Malibu, California. Her father noted her long-standing struggle with addiction, which he linked to postpartum depression. In her recent memoir, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning’, she had discussed her personal struggles, including her history with addiction.
