Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka maintains specific immigration and customs protocols for arriving travelers. Under regulations updated in July 2025, passengers are permitted to bring one laptop and one new mobile phone duty-free, while those carrying more than USD 5,000 in cash or over 100 grams of gold must use the Red Channel for declaration. Recent enforcement actions have targeted organized smuggling attempts. Customs intelligence officers intercepted 38.50 liters of foreign liquor, valued at approximately 770,000 BDT, from the luggage of seven passengers arriving from Mumbai on Air India flight AI-2183. In separate operations, the Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBN) has conducted multiple gold seizures, including the arrest of three individuals for carrying 861.8 grams of jewelry and a subsequent late-night operation in the car park basement involving three suspects and 397.7 grams of gold. In a significant escalation, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate officials intercepted two airport employees, Manik Mia and Mijanur Rahman, on the runway following a tip-off regarding an Emirates Airlines flight from Dubai. Authorities discovered 80 gold bars, each weighing approximately 117 grams, concealed inside the suspects’ shoes. The seized gold, valued at an estimated Tk16.25 crore, has led to a Dhaka court placing both employees on a five-day remand as investigators work to dismantle the smuggling network. Further enforcement occurred when Dhaka Customs House intercepted passenger Md Joni Rahman arriving from Kolkata on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-396. After attempting to pass through the Green Channel without declaration, Rahman was found to have hidden metallic substances inside pickle jars. The seizure included 1.054 kg of items, comprising 389 diamond-set gold rings, 151 diamond-set platinum rings, various white gold and silver items, 472 gold nose pins, and 720 precious stones including diamonds, topaz, and rubies, valued at approximately Tk2.70 crore.
